Start at the sides to give the nail the desired shape (round, square, etc.). Then file the tip of the nail.
Always file in the same direction: from the outside to the center of the nail. Avoid back-and-forth movements to avoid weakening the nail and splitting it.
For hard or brittle nails, soak hands in warm water beforehand.
